![]() I no longer thought this choice was merely about making the game more difficult.Īnd every time the titular drifter staggered and coughed up blood, I thought about Axl. The best you can do is upgrade your ability to carry more medkits. I thought more about the health bar you can never improve. My breath was taken away when I walked by a monstrous, cybernetic heart floating in a vat. And the small moments of calm meant so much more. This time, the constant sense of dread became much more real. I wondered if there was more in the game that I might have missed the first time around, so I started my second playthrough. I was reminded of how the player’s character in Hyper Light Drifter was suffering from a disease throughout the game. I learned about the congenital heart condition Alx had battled not only during the creation of the game, but throughout his life. My perspective on the game completely changed after watching a documentary about developer Alx Preston. The story, told without any text or spoken word, stayed with me long after my first playthrough. I was more than content to simply experience the pleasure of a beautifully made game with an art style and musical score that felt tailor-made to my tastes. I had assumed the contrasts in Hyper Light Drifter’s world and tone were just evidence of a well designed world made to draw the player in the first time I played it. And, in a small way, it was my story as well. ![]() I choose it because the developer put his story into the game. The tension is highlighted by the time you’re freed from it.īut that wasn’t why I picked it. This morose tone is punctuated by moments of relief: you can feel it in the pause after a battle, the beautiful vistas wrapped in pleasing synths or a peaceful town of refugees who’ve escaped from their ruined homelands. ![]() The immaculate pixel art, the hair-raising tones and the apocalyptic landscapes continually reinforce a message of decay. It’s hard not to be consumed by an ongoing sense of dread when playing through Hyper Light Drifter. It’s the game I didn’t know I wanted until I played it, and then it felt like something that was made specifically for me. The look, the feel, the sound, the story. The dash-through attack can be useful sometimes.Hyper Light Drifter is my game of the year. I got through maybe 2-3 puzzles that gave me a yellow bit in the end but thats about it. It is the one upgrade that everyone always recommends you get RIGHT AWAY that I found completely useless for the most part, even for traversing the levels. In fact you'll be hard pressed to use it under pressure since it not only requires very specific timing that changes halfways through, but leaves you in a stunned state after dashing for pro-longed periods of time. You can get by every boss fight perfectly fine without it. Unlike most I would say chain-dash is honestly not that important. Sword deflect is really useful for some fights in the south which you'll be doing last so you should have enough bits accumulated by then to have those three. Also take note that the way the dash shield works is like a sword deflect, you need to use it right before the projectile hits you. this is the activation demarcation!ĭash-shield and Charge attack in that order are really important, everything else is up to you really. you'll see a very faint diamond form around the drifter as projectiles near you. every other drifter set except for the blue/gold set you get for finding all the monoliths seem to have really negligible effects, if any at all? the navy blue/grey set sword and the purple/red/black set sword look dope with that loadout, though.Īs a side note, there seems to be some confusion as to how the shield dash works vis-a-vis its activation range. i like to use the fuchsia sword for that increased weapon recharge for optimal gun canceling. the white cloak is just nice for increased interaction speed, and the purple buddy doubles your stamina, which makes getting around much nicer. i personally love to deflect shots as soon as they're fired to hit whatever's shooting at me with one concise whup-pahhhhĪlso, i run white cloak, purple buddy and whatever colour sword you want to use. the lunge (also sold in the dash arena) to cancel your momentum so you don't slide everywhereĮverything else after that is basically personal affect.chain dashing for increased mobility, plus the ability to complete various challenges that require it.
